Call it extreme theatre! The Â鶹ÊÓƵ Theatre Department and the Student Theatre Association are presenting The 24 Hour Plays. Just as the title suggests, this is an evening of theatre crafted in just 24 hours from writing to performing a handful of new plays.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ students will gather Friday, Nov. 1 to determine the number of plays and the length of the productions. From there, the creative process begins. Writers have until 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 to complete the work when the students who are directors return to cast the plays and actors begin rehearsals. The performances will take place in front of a live audience less than 24 hours after the process started. The theme for the original short plays will be firsts - first kiss, first love, first 24-hour festival.

The 24 Hour Plays debuted in 1995 in Manhattan's Lower East Side originating the same creative process Â鶹ÊÓƵ students will use to produce original short plays on Nov. 2. Live theatre has an element of unpredictability but with The 24 Hour Plays the stakes are raised. In the end, the creative process forces the writers, directors and actors to overcome a number of obstacles like writers’ block and stage fright.

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ Theatre Department and the Student Theatre Association will perform The 24 Hour Plays at 8 p.m., Nov. 2 at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Southeast Campus VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education Studio Theatre.
